When a couple gets married, they have hopes and dreams but they cannot see into the future. And wow I had no idea how exciting our blank slate would turn out to be. We've moved 5 times in 5 years - a few moves within Provo, Utah...Goodness knows that we never could have predicted subsequent moves to Massachusetts, Iowa, and Texas. It's been a nonstop adventure for us! The last three years have been particularly rough, but I know that our marriage is better now than it was when it began, and I'm stoked to see where the next five years take us. Thanks to all the family and friends who have helped us enjoy the ride!

For her birthday, the husband of one of my friends gave her the fly-est gift ever! A stay in a hotel room ALL BY HERSELF!! I have no kidding thought of this as the ultimate in gifts since I was sharing a house with roommates after college. I mean really! A cushy bed that you don't have to make, time to read whatever book you want to read whenever you want, a spotless bathroom that you didn't clean yourself, a television that you can choose to watch or not watch, light-blocking drapes that give you the best shuteye ever. Seriously! And for a mom, the gift of being completely alone!! Luke doesn't quite get the appeal, but ladies out there, I know I'm not the only one who thinks of this as the ultimate in pampering!

Our friends the Vandenbees are in town this summer and they just celebrated their 2 year anniversary. Congrats! Well, the Mister gave his sweetie a cooking class at Whole Foods World HQ's Culinary Center - and he oh so generously invited me along so that we could have some girl time. (Thank you thank you thank you!)
We had a blast - and yes, this is actually the very first time I've made a classical fruit tart. I confess it's always intimidated me - I'm more of a rustic crostada girl. But I'm such a convert - love that the dough is easier to work with than pie dough. I'm plotting ways to add a nice chocolate ganache layer to my next creation. (It was like Oprah in that we got to take home the tart pan - you should have seen the look on Luke's face when I walked in the door with this!)

Have always wanted to go! And so much more fun with a child. Laurel talked to the elephants and was thrilled with the Sea Lion Show.
I had the best state-side vacation of my life when Laurel and I flew out to visit my youngest sister and her husband last week. My cute sister is expecting a baby girl in August, so it was a nice hurrah before the Tammen girls all become mommies. What a great trip - I love the ocean, and Laurel wasn't scared of it a bit. And she basked in all the attention. And wow did I pig out! Pastries, donuts, nachos, burritos, crab cakes, mahi mahi, frozen yogurt, In-n-Out burger and fries (animal style of course!)...Back to a much more restricted diet this week!
Yes, that is me eating a Hostess Cupcake - an orange one. You all know I love a good buttercream covered from-scratch baked good, but the elusive orange Hostess cupcake is something I can rarely find. Fortunately, the good people at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base have discerning palates too!
