Dean enjoyed his vacation too

Luke took Thanksgiving week off from work, and it was a wonderful stay-cation. Lots of library books and good food and sleeping and more good food...I snapped this picture of Luke's frozen eyebrows and lashes when he came inside from putting the second layer of bricks on his snow fort. You'd be wearing a balaclava too if it were negative 15 degrees outside!

Happy Turkey on Turkey Day

I volunteered to roast the turkey this year, even though turkey doesn't even make it on my list of favorite meats. I brined it in a salt water bath for a full 24 hours prior to roasting, and this extra step made for a deliciously moist bird. That, and rubbing the skin with a stick of butter of course!

Cranberry Meringue Pie Recipe

Truly my favorite holiday pie - make it the day before (at least the filling and curd) and then serve. This mellows the tartness a bit, although it is still a tart pie.

Reading Hour

I walked into the living room Sunday evening after putting Dean to bed and was greeted with this site.

Note: Luke had to bring back red silk pajamas from Italy. Purrrr!

Breakfast of Champions

I couldn't wait until Thanksgiving to make my favorite pie. Cranberry meringue - be still my heart! It's one of those pies that is better the next day - and what a way to start the day!

Out of the Mouths of Babes

This morning, our string quartet rehearsed in the chapel. Laurel was wandering - and found the magic buttons beside the Bishopric's seats. Our rehearsal was suddenly interrupted by a male voice filling the chapel.

Once we were able to turn it off, Laurel asked "What was that??" She paused and then answered her own question: "Heavenly Father!"

Wishful Thinking

I rarely remember my dreams, but this one was delightful: Mrs. Backer's Bakery opened a store in Midway, and the manager begged me to work a few hours a week for them due to my love of their pastries and my people-skills.

Sigh. Like the time when I was a kid and I woke up from a dream that there were Corn Pops in our pantry (breakfast at our house was strictly a non-sugary cereal affair), ran into the kitchen, and discovered a significant gap between reality and fantasy. I actually cried.

Pasta Guitar

I've been rehearsing for a musical number at church, and every time I bring my viola out, Laurel fetches her instrument too.

Where's my breakfast??

Laurel's First Words in the Morning

"Where's Beatrix Potter?"

She loves this book, and it's been such fun for her to choose stories out of it for bedtime...for playtime...for when Mommy's trying to cook dinner...

Winter is Coming

Time change, dark and dreary, a high of 39 degrees today....I coped by baking bread, roasting squash, and making a banana cream pie. Hope I'm not priming myself for too much holiday weight gain....
By the way, banana cream pie with a meringue topping instead of a whipped cream topping = delish!

Laurel reprised her role as a "buzzing bee" from last year. And Dean was an ear of corn - or is that a caterpillar?

And yes, Luke now owns a baseball hat - swag from the Chamber of Commerce.

Seven and a half months

Birthday Shenanigans

Luke's family came over on Sunday for some birthday festivities and Laurel loved all the attention.

A present of 4 puppets quickly turned into 2 slippers and 2 mittens:

The Way-Back Machine

I finally went through all our wedding photos from almost six and a half years ago, and it was a blast. Here are some of my favorites!
