Our Favorite Breakfast

Breakfast Compote (adapted from

Yields approximately 4 half cup servings

1 ½ cups hot water
½ cup cracked whole grains
½ cup rolled oats
½ cup dried fruit
4 heaping T flaxseed
4 heaping T chia seeds
4 heaping T chopped nuts
honey/brown sugar/maple syrup
1 cup berries
1 cup apples or peaches, chopped
2 oranges, freshly juiced (provides a citrus fruit, while reducing or avoiding the need for milk

1. Prior day: Put ½ cup cracked grains in a small pot; add hot water. Soak over night.

2. Next morning: Bring the pot to a boil, add rolled oats, dried fruit and season generously with cinnamon. Stir. (Try vanilla too.) Turn off the heat and let sit for five minutes.

3. While cooking, prepare bowls by adding to each:
- fresh berries
-orange juice

4. Combine all ingredients in the bowls. Add cream or half a partially defrosted banana per person.
